If you've decided to pursue a professional makeup artist (MUA) career, the first step is to find a good MUA school, with a proven record of producing talented professionals. Get as much information about all the schools in your area as possible and decide which one is best to help you meet your goals...

We don't recommend online courses as your primary source of instruction, since you wouldn't get the best hands on training that you'll need in an instructional environment to be successful.  Choosing the best school you can, along with seeking every opportunity you can to gain experience (practice your craft) is a good method.

Also try to learn by yourself how to apply makeup as a professional: assessing the client (coloring, face shape, skin type), preparing the face, applying makeup (foundation, eye makeup, blush, lip color, etc.) and completing the look. Trying to do makeup for print photography a very important part of the job.  Knowing the difference between live makeup and makeup for photography is also important. Another important thing is to learn about character makeup (film and television, theater, special effects makeup), what to have in your kit (different types of makeup and application tools), how to keep up with makeup trends and the best brands to use for specific purposes, along with how to quickly get experience through volunteer work and apprenticeship opportunities...

While starting your MUA career, find out how to create an impressive portfolio even if you have no previous paid MUA experience. Do some research on who employs makeup artists and try to contact them, including: salons and spas, retail stores and cosmetic companies.  Finding opportunities to work with, and support good professional photographers is a great way also.  Where makeup jobs are advertised, find out what employers are looking for and how to make a good impression in an interview. Do your best to find the job where you could get that valuable experience and secure examples of your work to market yourself to future opportunities.

If you've decided to be an MUA because the job is interesting and has many benefits, keep in mind that it won't happen overnight. You have to be very patient, do the best you can to become a real professional.  You have to be very professional and detail oriented about your work to really become a successful makeup artist. You have to stay up-to-date and be very communicative. Good communication and interpersonal skills are very important in such a profession because if you become a famous makeup specialist, you'll have to learn how to deal with various people coming from many different backgrounds and cultures.  some may be well-known people who may sometimes have a rather difficult character.

If you belong to a salon, spa or anything of this kind, you won't be able to choose your clients and will have to pay money to your employer for use of the facilities many times, yet the advantage is that you won't have to search for clients yourself and you will be sure that you'll make money. If you become a well known makeup professional, clients will search for you and your earnings will be higher. Famous MUA's commonly establish their own businesses and hire others to do the job. If you enjoy making people beautiful, communicating with famous and interesting people, its a great field to pursue.

Becoming professional MUA is undoubtedly a very hard task; yet when you're successful, you're able to travel, meet famous actors, models, musicians, and designers.  You'll also earn a great income and become a well known person yourself. Additionally, you'll have fantastic opportunities to express yourself creativel and make other people beautiful....
